FBPD: Scammers now invoking FBI in scheme

Flowery Branch Police (FBPD) issued a scam alert Saturday – one that invokes the FBI to strike fear into the hearts of the scammers victims.

“We’ve received reports of individuals calling residents and claiming to be FBI agents,” a FBPD Facebook posting says. “These scammers tell victims there is a warrant for their arrest and demand that they withdraw money and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine to ‘avoid being arrested.’ This is a scam!”

The post points out, as has been done regarding other scams over the years, that law enforcement agencies will never ask you to pay fines or resolve warrants using Bitcoin, Green Dot cards, gift cards, or any type of prepaid payment method.

If you receive a call like this:

*Do not send money.

*Do not share personal information.

*Hang up and call to verify.

If you’re concerned or unsure, please contact the Flowery Branch Police Department or the Hall County non-emergency dispatch number.
