FBC’s oldest member turns 101 as church readies to celebrate 200 years

Louise Evans, the oldest member of Gainesville’s First Baptist Church, is celebrating her 101st birthday as her church gets ready to mark 200 years of existence. Evans has been a part of First Baptist her entire life, according to a posting on the church’s Facebook page.

“Louise came forward for membership and baptism at just 8 years old during a revival service—meaning she has been a member of our church family for over 93 years,” the posting continues. “According to our history committee, she is likely our oldest living member and currently has the longest continuous membership. She still attends services every Sunday and is an active member of the Winsome Sunday School class (pictured with her).

“For 40 years, Louise faithfully served as a greeter for members and visitors. She still cherishes the close relationships and connections she made while serving. She even learned to sew through a church quilting group, where (in her words) they “had more fun!” Some of her quilts will be on display during our 200th Anniversary celebration on August 15 & 16.”

What’s her advice for a long life?

“Stay busy, don’t sit around feeling sorry for yourself, and do things you enjoy. For her, that’s yard work—she says it’s her therapy. She also loves watching Atlanta Braves Baseball. And she’ll tell you how grateful she is for her children, Deborah and Tommy, who take such good care of her.

“If you think about it… our church has been around for 200 years, and Louise has been here for 101 of those years. That’s something worth celebrating.

“As we celebrate 200 years at First Baptist Gainesville, we’re reminded that our story isn’t just about a building but the people who have worshipped in it.”
