An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for all of north Georgia Sunday night through Monday morning. What exactly does this mean?
The National Weather Service (NWS) says an Extreme Cold Watch means dangerously cold air, with or without wind, is possible and people should be prepared.
“Low temperatures below 20 (degrees) and winds 10-15 mph, gusting to 20, will mean wind chills near or below 0,” the advisory says. “(The counties within the watch area) are likely to be upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning in the next 24-36 hours.” An Extreme Cold Warning is issued when the wind chill or temperature is expected to fall to even lower.
As the Arctic air barrels toward Georgia, Gainesville officials announced Saturday afternoon that the Chattahoochee Golf Club will be closed indefinitely starting Sunday morning. “CGC staff will cover the greens first thing Sunday…,” Gainesville spokeswoman Christina Santee wrote in an email. “While the watch (is effective) 1 a.m.-noon Monday, Jan. 20, the greens could remain covered for days as the NWS predicts evening snow showers Tuesday and lows in the teens to mid 20s through the weekend.”
Despite the frosty temps, the driving range will remain open during this time. Chattahoochee Grill will open for Sunday brunch, then daily for lunch and dinner (call ahead for holiday hours).
