Domestic incident leads to gunshots, brief stand off with sheriff’s deputies

A man accused of firing multiple gunshots at a residence in the 3400 block of Harmony Church Road over the weekend remains in the Hall County Jail with no bond. That incident also led to a brief standoff with Hall County sheriff’s deputies.

Gilberto Candido Bonilla-Jaimes, 48, of Gainesville, was dropping off a child at the residence just before 10:30 p.m. when he and a woman became involved in a verbal argument outside the house, the sheriff’s office reported. As the argument ended, the suspect got into his vehicle, brandished a handgun from the driver-side window of the vehicle and then fired multiple shots in the direction of the woman and the child.

The preliminary investigation found five places where bullets struck the exterior of the residence. At the time the shots were fired, there were also four people inside the residence. No one was physically injured.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle at his residence on Floyd Road in Gainesville. Believing the suspect was in the house and was likely armed, deputies made numerous attempts to communicate with him with negative results.

After a search warrant was obtained for the residence, deputies breached the front door, calling from outside the house for Bonilla-Jaimes to turn himself in. SWAT was called to the scene to assist, but before the team arrived, around 1:30 a.m. Monday, the suspect emerged from the front door and surrendered.

Bonilla-Jaimes was booked into the Hall County Jail on four counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act (FVA).
