Cracking down on crime; An Ocmulgee of a mess; UGA does it again

*Over two months, law enforcement in one Georgia county has confiscated at least two million dollars worth of drugs along with the arrest of 47 suspects on various crimes. Those crimes include murder, attempted murder, drug trafficking, and the sexual exploitation of children, according to the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. During their 60-day drug and crime bust throughout the city of Columbus, 37 firearms and 18 vehicles were seized along with over $2.3 million of narcotics and over one hundred thousand dollars of cash.

*Due to excessive rainfall, Macon’s Parks and Beautification Department has closed portions of Amerson River Park and Ocmulgee Heritage Trail because of rising water levels in the Ocmulgee River. The closures, effective today, are prompted by safety concerns, with public access halted over the weekend. NOAA predicts the river will exceed 20 feet by Wednesday, and closures will remain until the water level drops and cleanup is completed.  

*The University of Georgia has been ranked number one for commercial products brought to market, having developed 69 new products in fiscal year 2024. Those include vaccines for poultry, biodegradable plastics, biomedical tools, virtual reality tools for disasters, and new plant varieties. This is the third consecutive year UGA has achieved this ranking from the Association of University Technology Marketers.
