Gainesville’s Doug Collins found himself just a heartbeat from becoming President Tuesday night – for a while.
The new Secretary of Veterans Affairs was the designated survivor during President Trump’s joint address to Congress, meaning he was moved to a secret location to take the reins of government should the unthinkable happen when the President, Vice President, the House Speaker, who is third in line, and most other members of Congress are all in one place.
Day-to-day, as a member of the President’s cabinet, Collins is 17th in line to the presidency.
