Clear bags only; Christian college sues state; $$$ for student mental health

(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK) – Gwinnett County Public Schools is considering implementing a clear bag policy for students, despite survey results showing that 87% of students oppose it. The district ordered over a million dollars’ worth of clear bags before seeking feedback from parents. A parent who serves on the School Safety Advisory Council raised concerns about the effectiveness of the bags and questioned the district’s decision-making process.

*A Christian college in Lithonia has filed a lawsuit against the Georgia Student Finance Commission claiming they’ve been discriminated against for being excluded in financial aid. Luther Rice College & Seminary filed the lawsuit this week in Atlanta. They claim excluding financial aid to Luther Rice because of its religious classification is unconstitutional. The complaint was filed by the group Alliance Defending Freedom which has successfully sued other organizations for alleged religious discrimination .

*Georgia will be receiving $50 million for mental health services for students. There has been increased talk about the mental health of some students since the mass shooting at Apalachee High School last month. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona visited a Gwinnett County school Thursday to talk about the resources Georgia will be receiving. Gwinnett along with Bibb, Fulton, and Muscogee counties will each be receiving federal School-Based Mental Health Services Grants for the mental health initiatives.
