Buford man charged with conning auto parts stores to the tune of $120k

An investigation that began in Oakwood August 8 culminated in Gainesville Tuesday with the arrest of a Buford man on charges he scammed Napa Auto Parts stores in several locations out of $120,000 in merchandise.

“(Oakwood Police) responded to the Napa Auto Parts store located at 3403 Mundy Mill Road in reference to a fraud case,” Det. Lt. Stewart Webb said Thursday. “Upon arrival, officers made contact with the manager who told them that Jake Dattilo has been committing fraud at multiple Napa stores around North Georgia.”

He told the officers Dattilo, 32, was entering stores pretending to be a United Rentals employee and purchasing merchandise using United Rentals business accounts. 

On 08/19/2025 at approximately 1030 hours, We received information that Jake Dattilo was enroute to the Oakwood Napa store to fraudulently obtain more merchandise.

“We conducted surveillance on Jake Dattilo and followed him to a Gainesville Napa store where he fraudulently obtained more merchandise,” Lt. Webb said. “We worked together with the Gainesville Police Department to arrest Jake Dattilo as he walked out of the Gainesville store.

“Currently, has been linked to approximately $120,000.00 in fraudulent transactions.” 

Dattilo is being held in the Hall County Jail in lieu of $26,000 bond and facing 20 charges including 17 for forgery in the 1st degree.

Lt. Webb said more charges pending.
