“…the USDA Forest Service has temporarily closed Springer Mountain Shelter for overnight camping on the Blue Ridge Ranger District due to aggressive bear behavior toward hikers and campers.
The closure…will remain in place for approximately 14 days to allow the Forest Service and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife specialists to assess the situation.
Public safety is our highest priority. The Forest Service is working closely with Wildlife Resources Division – Georgia DNR to monitor bear activity and implement necessary safety measures to protect visitors.
Forest visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, monitor alerts on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest website, and contact the Blue Ridge Ranger District at (706) 754-6928 with any questions.
