The Barrow and Jackson County animal shelters recently welcomed their first on-site veterinarian, calling “a major step forward” in improving animal care and helping pets find their forever homes faster.
By bringing Dr. Jennifer Odum in-house, the shelters can now provide quicker treatment, reduce transportation needs, and streamline daily operations — allowing staff to focus more time on caring for animals and preparing them for adoption.
Dr. Odum brings has been practicing more than a decade having served as Medical Director for Planned PEThood in Duluth and previously working with DeKalb County Animal Services and Fulton County Animal Services.
This position was made possible through a partnership between the two counties, with Jackson County supporting 20% of the cost — ensuring access to Dr. Odum’s services one day each week for Jackson County animals.
“This is a great example of two communities coming together for the greater good,” said Jackson County Animal Control Director Brad Richards. “We all want what’s best for our four-legged citizens, and this partnership helps make that possible.”
