Baby in ‘grave’ condition; father charged with child cruelty

A Gainesville man has been arrested in a child cruelty case involving injuries to his infant children, one of whom was in “grave” condition at last check.

Julian Chase Jalbert, Sr., 27, was taken into custody Wednesday at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where one of the children is hospitalized in grave condition, Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman B.J. Williams said Thursday.

“According to the investigation to date, Hall County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Shuler Road around 9:10 a.m., Sunday…in response to a 911 call involving an 8-week-old infant who had stopped breathing,” Williams said. “The infant first was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville where doctors diagnosed the baby with a brain bleed.”

The baby was then transferred to the Atlanta hospital where doctors determined that it had suffered “abusive head trauma” consistent with the baby’s head being violently jerked forward and backward, Williams added. “A welfare check of the second infant, the injured child’s twin, revealed a bruise on the baby’s leg.”

The investigation determined injuries to both infants could be attributed to Jalbert, she said. He was charged with felony first-degree child cruelty and misdemeanor battery and remains in the Hall County Jail with no bond.

The Georgia Division of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS) assumed custody of both infants.
