Arrest in cold case murder of UGA student

FBI agents from Gainesville helped solve the murder of a University of Georgia student which occurred 23 years ago.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced the arrest of Edrick Lamont Faust, 48, Athens Thursday. Faust is charged with murder, two counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, concealing the death of another, arson, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, tampering with evidence, and one count of aggravated sodomy.

Last September, the GBI Cold Case Unit partnered with Athens-Clarke County Police (ACCP) to conduct an in-depth review and analysis of the ongoing investigation into the coed’s death. Firefighters discovered Tara Louise Baker’s body after responding to a fire at her Athens apartment January 19, 2001.  At the time, Baker was 23 and a first-year law school student at the UGA. She was from Lovejoy.

Authorities have not said what led them to Faust and if he been a suspect at any time since the murder.

In addition to the FBI office in Gainesville, the GBI, and ACCP, five other local and state law enforcement agencies participated in the investigation.
