As it turns out, there were two earthquakes overnight Thursday in the Hall-Gwinnett County area – both of them on the Hall County side of the county line with each epicenter in Lake Lanier.
The first measured 2.3 on the Richter Scale and was at a depth of about five miles. It occurred about 11:15, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The second happened about two hours later also at a depth of around five miles and measured 1.7.
People reported feeling the quakes in their homes from the Buford Dam area to south Forsyth County, the USGS said. Most of the reports came from Buford, but 21 people said they felt it in Cumming. Only one person had reported feeling anything from the 1.7 tremor.
Earthquakes typically aren’t felt until they top 2.5. That’s also where minor damage can occur. None was reported from these two.
