Alleged scam ends with Gainesville woman’s arrest

Property crimes investigators with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) have charged a Gainesville woman with theft by deception and forgery in connection to a scam where she bought items from local businesses using fraudulent checks.

Megan Francis Seabolt, 34, was taken into custody at her residence in northern Hall County on Wednesday.

“The investigation so far has implicated Seabolt in the theft of two large sheds from Wilson Brothers Shed Haven on Cleveland Highway in Clermont and the attempted theft of a camper and a vehicle from Twins Trucking and Equipment on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman B.J. Williams said. “The theft from the Clermont business occurred on Dec. 15, 2024, while the attempted theft from the Gainesville business occurred on Dec. 22. The investigation determined Ms. Seabolt made the purchases and attempted purchases using fraudulent checks she ordered online with information she obtained from a Lawrenceville business. She represented herself as the owner of the business when using the checks to conduct the transactions.”

Williams added that Investigators became aware of the theft from Shed Haven when the business owner contacted them on Tuesday. “With evidence they obtained from that incident, they were able to tie Ms. Seabolt to the crimes.”

Property crimes investigators believe Seabolt may be involved in additional crimes of a similar nature.

She currently faces the following criminal charges:

  • Theft by deception (two counts)
  • Forgery in the third degree (three counts)
  • Forgery in the fourth degree
  •

Seabolt suspect is also being held on an outstanding warrant from Douglas County.
