After the storm: Drought all but gone

The drought that suddenly reappeared in Georgia several months ago has disappeared even more quickly – thanks to Hurricane Helene.

A week ago, the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) reported that 58 percent of the state was suffering from the drought. This week’s report, released Thursday, shows nearly 99 percent of Georgia is drought-free. Three months ago, that number was only five percent.

The only areas showing any signs of drought, according to the report, are all or portions of six counties confined to the far northwest corner of the state.

And the level of Lake Lanier? It’s at 1070.3, up about two feet from a week ago.
