Accused spa shooter’s death penalty case back on track; Judge orders documents in Fulton election case unsealed; Former deputy sheriff arrested

*The death penalty case for accused Atlanta spa shooter Robert Long can now proceed after a delay related to attorney requirements. Long’s previous public defender stepped down earlier this year, but Nathanial Studelska from the Georgia Public Defender’s office joins defense attorney Karlyn Skall. The 26-year-old Long is already serving a life sentence without parole for four murders in Cherokee County and now faces additional charges for the March 2021 deaths of four people at two Atlanta spas. A delay last week occurred in Long’s case because of a Georgia law requiring two qualified attorneys for defendants facing the death penalty.

*A judge is allowing documents in the election case between Fulton County and the Justice Department to be unsealed. County Commission chair Robb Pitts says in granting the county’s request the public now has access to all documents involved. Fulton County is trying to quash a subpoena from the federal government that seeks personal information about everyone who worked with the 2020 election.

*A former chief deputy sheriff is accused of taking guns from the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Tim Watkins called on the GBI to investigate the claims close to two-months ago. The GBI says 55-year-old Ron James was arrested and charged with theft by taking and oath of office violation.
