The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Friday the plane that crashed into a parking lot at Lake Lanier Islands late Thursday afternoon “crashed under unknown circumstances.” AIN Notices Report (faa.gov)

A 60-year-old Dunwoody man, Howard Lee Joy, 60, died in the crash. He was the only person onboard the Hawker Beechcraft and was the aircraft’s owner, according to the FAA report. Flight Aware, an online aircraft tracking service, shows that the plane left Peachtree-DeKalb Airport in DeKalb County about 15 minutes before the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will now try to determine the cause of the crash. The agency will likely issue its preliminary findings in about a week. A final report may not be available for another 12 months or so.
