NGHS receives largest donation in its history

Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) has received the largest single gift in its history through a donation from the estate of Anne Warren Thomas, a longtime volunteer and community advocate whose support helped shape several key programs within the organization.

Thomas, who died in 2025, served for many years as a volunteer with NGHS and was president of the system’s Auxiliary. She also founded the Love Light program and supported the establishment of the Green Warren Dental Clinic through her involvement with Good News Clinics.

NGHS officials announced the gift during a ceremony held in Anne’s Garden, a space dedicated in Thomas’ honor outside Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville’s Green Tower.

“Anne was deeply passionate about this community, and especially this hospital,” said Chris Bray, chief philanthropy officer for NGHS and president of the NGHS Foundation. “Her legacy is the belief in the power of exceptional healthcare to change lives, strengthen families and build a healthier future for our entire region.”

Thomas’ daughter, Irene Thomas, said the ceremony reflected the strong connection her mother felt to both the hospital and the community.

“My mother loved this community and this hospital,” she said. “Celebrating her legacy in this garden named for her really signifies how much this hospital meant to her, and how much she means to this hospital.”

The donation will help advance the next phase of the NGHS Foundation’s $200 million fundraising campaign, which coincides with the health system’s 75th anniversary.

“This campaign is especially meaningful as we celebrate NGHS’ 75th anniversary,” said NGHS President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Matt Hanley. “Just as Anne’s generosity will benefit generations to come, this campaign will help shape the next 75 years of care for our patients and communities.”

The amount of the gift was not disclosed at the request of Thomas’ estate.
