Since the Wednesday accident in Gainesville that left a 22-month-old dead, some people have taken to social media declaring the elderly should not be allowed to drive. However, that age group has its share of defenders, as well.
“But I know a lot of drivers in their 70-80 year old range that are great drivers,” one person wrote. “Taking away someone’s right to drive is basically locking them in their home and, having to depend on others for everything. And some of them don’t have anyone. Pray for the family of the child. But also, for the woman who has to live with this the rest of her life.”
The latest Census Bureau report, meanwhile, shows fatal accidents involving younger drivers far outnumber those 55 and older.

In the case in question, the driver was a 68-year-old woman whose car drove onto the walkway in front of a number of stores at a shopping center, police said. The woman said it happened when she accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to park.
Late Thursday afternoon, the woman’s attorney issued a statement on her behalf.
“Mrs. (Teresa) Parker dedicated her life to children as a schoolteacher for thirty years, and she is heartbroken by Knox’s passing,” Blake Poole wrote. “Her thoughts and prayers are with Mr. and Mrs. Skelton and their family following this tragic accident.”
At last check, Gainesville Police were still investigating, and no determination had been made regarding any charges.
