Members of the Gainesville Fire Department (GFD) are among others mourning with one of their colleagues and his wife following the death Wednesday of their 22-month-old son in an accident at an eastside shopping center. Injured child dies At the same time, a fundraising account has been set up on behalf of the couple.
“As many of you have heard by now, one of our own and his wife experienced a heartbreaking tragedy yesterday—one that no parent should ever have to endure,” a GFD Facebook post reads.
“Samuel and Kiana Skelton are two of the most humble, caring, and genuine people you could ever meet,” the post continues. “Our department is heartbroken by this tragedy, and we ask that our community surround the Skelton family with love, prayers, and support as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
“Members of public safety are often called upon to respond to some of the most heartbreaking and unimaginable situations our communities face. We train and prepare to handle these difficult moments, but nothing can prepare you for when tragedy strikes one of your own. The impact is felt even more deeply when the family affected is part of your own department family.”
Members of the department have organized a fundraiser to help support the Skeltons. “We ask that you consider showing your support in any way you can. Every donation, every prayer, and every act of kindness means more than words can express.”
