Gainesville area residents are marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon this week.
Among the observances that are planned are a flag lowering at Gainesville Fire Department headquarters which will take place Friday morning at the time the attacks on the World Trade Center began.
Forsyth County, meanwhile, will host its annual 9/11 Stair Climb Saturday at West Forsyth High School. The event includes a climb of 110 stories in honor of the first responders who died on September 11.
Check‑in begins at 7:30, followed by the start of the climb an hour later. Participants will receive a name badge recognizing a fallen first responder and a raffle ticket. Registration proceeds and sales of commemorative shirts will benefit B.A.D.G.E. of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and The Benefit Fund, which provide financial and emotional support to local first responders.

In addition, an annual ceremony will be held on the Dahlonega campus of the University of North Georgia at 6:30 Thursday on the drill field. The keynote speaker will be Col. Christian Durham, a professor of military science at the university.
