The federal government is making $500 million available for seven projects – one of them in Commerce – to expand mineral and material processing, battery manufacturing, and recycling capacity in the country.
The projects will strengthen America’s domestic critical minerals and materials supply chains, reduce reliance on foreign sources, bolster national security, and advance American energy dominance, according to the announcement.
The Commerce facility’s mission will be to recover and rejuvenate nickel‑containing cathode material from battery manufacturing scrap. The goal will be to create a domestic source of battery‑grade cathode material by rapidly returning rejuvenated material to production at what the Department of Energy says will be a “significantly” lower cost.
