As Republican senatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Mike Collins continues to fend off questions about his son-in-law’s right-wing postings, two of his House colleagues, including one who represents Hall County, are coming to his defense.
Andrew Clyde (R-Jackson County) tells the AJC he considers this a private matter that has nothing to do with Collins’ Senate campaign.
“That’s a family issue that needs to be handled at the family level,” Clyde added. “That’s not an issue that should affect Mike Collins whatsoever because it’s not Mike Collins.”
South Georgia Republican Rep. Buddy Carter has also come to Collins’ defense.
Collins is running against Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff in the Nov. 3 General Election.
The issue centers around recently antisemitic and white nationalist social media posts by David Alan Scheer.
Ossoff has called for Collins to apologize for Scheer’s statements, but Collins has repeatedly said he has tried to be as clear as possible that he does not agree with or condone his son-in-law’s comments, the AJC reported Friday.
