Forsyth Co. yanks permit for proposed data center

The Forsyth County Commission (FCC) has revoked a conditional use permit for a proposed data center in the northern part of the county.

The Forsyth Flyer reports the permit, originally approved in 2024, was canceled after the developer failed to obtain a land disturbance permit or begin construction within the county’s required 18‑month window.

The commissioners voted unanimously at a recent meeting to revoke the permit. Residents who spoke at the meeting supported the decision, citing the usual concerns raised about data centers: water use, power demand, and noise. Also, the impact such a facility could have on nearby residential areas.

Since the data center was proposed, Forsyth County has adopted more detailed rules for data centers, including requirements covering setbacks, buffers, generators, cooling systems, sound levels and water use.
