Gville federal building again avoids executioner’s axe

Several more federal buildings in Georgia are starting the week under review for possible closure. This is part of a wider effort by Uncle Sam to reduce “underutilized and costly” real estate holdings. But once more, Gainesville’s Sidney O. Smith Federal Building is not included.

The facilities on the newest “hit” list are the Federal Building in Athens, IRS Service Center in Atlanta, Savannah’s federal building, and the Customs Service building also in Savannah.

The government considers them as “underutilized” and in need of major repairs or renovations to the tune of almost $42 million. Getting rid of them instead of renovating them would save the government nearly $100 million over three years, the feds say.

Facilities previously placed targeted for closure are in Atlanta, Rome, Valdosta, Thomasville, Chamblee, Dublin, and Statesboro. Even though some of these have been given a new lease on life, they remain part of the government’s continuing real estate review.
