The state Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Green Street Improvement Project, which has been met with strong opposition from not only Green Street property owners but others as well, Opposition mounting to GDOT’s latest proposal for Green St. has gotten the attention of at least one Eminent Domain law firm in Atlanta.
An email is being sent by the firm to Gainesville residents and businesses – some not even on Green Street.
“The government is valuing your property now – there are so many pitfalls to avoid at this stage!” it reads. “The government is like any buyer and they want to acquire your property for as little as possible, and what you do now may significantly impact your offer.
“Don’t leave money on the table! Demand that the government pay you for the “highest and best use” of your land.”
It goes on to warn that one of the most common pitfalls at this stage in such situations is waiting to hire an attorney.
“The clock is ticking. The government’s offer is almost certainly too low, but if you wait too long, you may miss your window to negotiate for more.
“The sooner you hire an eminent domain attorney, the sooner they can start reviewing the plans, building your case, and negotiating possible changes to lessen the impact of the project on you.”
Included in the message is a “To Do List https://bit.ly/GAEDtodo “to help you work towards getting the ‘highest and best use’ of your land.”
Meanwhile, a petition continues to circulate online in protest of GDOT’s plans. ‘Save Green Street’ petition started and by 6:00 Monday morning it contained nearly 2,000 “verified signatures.”
