A routine traffic stop by a state trooper on I-985 at Friendship Road Monday night turned out to be not so routine.
The state patrol said Tuesday the trooper initiated the stop after clocking an SUV at 96 mph in a 70 mph zone. The driver stopped on the exit ramp to Friendship and as the trooper was getting out of his vehicle the driver shot self.
Once entry into the vehicle was made (its doors had been locked) it was discovered that the driver was dead of a gunshot wound.
The exit ramp was promptly closed as was a section of the Interstate.
