Two different scams have recently targeted Dahlonega residents – one involving the city manager and the other, the police department.
CITY OF DAHLONEGA FACEBOOK POSTS:
“If you receive an email claiming to be from City Manager Allison Martin using the address [email protected], please be aware that this is NOT a legitimate City of Dahlonega email address. This email is a scam and is not valid.
Official communications from the City of Dahlonega will only come from verified city email addresses. We will never use a “@usa.com” email address for official correspondence.
If you receive this fraudulent email:
• Do not respond
• Do not click any links
• Do not provide personal or financial information
• Report it to our office immediately
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact City Hall directly using the contact information listed on the City of Dahlonega’s official website.”
Secondly:
“The City of Dahlonega has been made aware that the Police Chief’s phone number is currently being used in a Caller ID spoofing scam. Caller ID spoofing falsifies the phone number displayed on your phone to make it appear local or trustworthy.
Please be advised:
The Dahlonega Police Department will NOT solicit money over the phone.
We will NOT threaten arrest, demand payment, or request personal or financial information by phone.
If you receive a call from 706-482-2716 soliciting funds or threatening law enforcement action, this is a spam call.
If you receive one of these calls:
• Do not provide any personal information.
• Hang up immediately.
• Consider reporting the call to your phone carrier and the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.“
