What might lie ahead for Sheriff Couch; public reaction to his arrest

A possible suspension by the governor lies ahead for Hall County’s sheriff who was arrested Friday morning on DUI and other related charges.

Georgia law provides the governor with the option of appointing a committee to investigate a sheriff accused of criminal activity or misconduct. If the committee recommends suspension, the governor may do so for up to 60 days with the option of extending it another 30 days.

Gerald Couch was in his county-issued vehicle when he was stopped about 10:30 by one of his deputies who says he saw him weaving over a county road. EARLIER STORY. POSTED AT 7:15 P.M FRIDAY: UPDATE: Sheriff ‘unsteady on his feet,’ ‘speech slurred’ when arrested

So, what has been the public’s reaction to Couch’s arrest? Well, social media has been alive with comments – some expressing sympathy, declaring that he’s been a good public servant and deserves another chance after some degree of punishment. Others, however, are demanding his resignation, saying he’s lost the public trust and should be setting better example for his constituents. Here’s a sampling of what’s being said:

“Pray for him. You don’t know what he’s going through…”

“That was a decision he made. Risking his life along with others. Time to step down and deal with issues.”

“He doesn’t need to resign they need to fire him immediately.”

“Innocent until proven guilty. No victim. No crime. Support your local Sheriffs.”

“He was drunk at 10:30 AM…and managed to get bail the same day as his arrest which no regular citizen would ever be able to do.”

“Sorry to hear this!”

“Mybe this is the catalyst for Gerald to get sober for good.”

“Turn this mess into a miracle. May the Lord be with you on this journey. He’s your hope.”

“How very embarrassing.”

“Praying for Gerald.”
