Get some free firewood while helping the USFS

In response to impacts from the storm which moved through north Georgia on Jan. 24, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is authorizing the issuance of free-use firewood permits on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest’s Blue Ridge and Chattooga River Ranger Districts.

The storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds that resulted in downed trees, debris, and localized damage across both ranger districts. Forest Service employees continue to address impacts to roads, recreation sites, and other forest infrastructure. Offering free-use firewood permits supports these efforts by allowing the public to collect downed material while helping reduce storm-related debris across the forest.

“These permits are a practical way to serve the public while also supporting sound forest management,” said Judy Toppins, forest supervisor. “By allowing people to gather downed wood for personal use, we can improve access and safety, reduce storm-related debris, and make productive use of material that would otherwise remain on the ground.”

The permits authorize the collection of dead or down trees and branches along open Forest Service System roads and other designated firewood collection areas across the Blue Ridge and Chattooga River districts. Permit holders may collect up to four cords of firewood. Firewood collected under these permits is for personal use only and may not be resold.

“(The storm) downed material in accessible areas throughout the forest,” said Sarah Paski, timber resource specialist. “Free-use permits help us manage that material responsibly by reducing fuel buildup and supporting ongoing recovery work, while also allowing members of the public to meet their personal firewood needs.”

Free-use firewood permits may be obtained at Forest Service offices across the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. Permits are not available online.
