State legislation aims to stop Oakwood, Social Circle detention centers

Three Democratic state lawmakers plan to introduce legislation in the Georgia General Assembly in an effort to prevent the federal government from moving ahead with ICE detention/processing facilities in Oakwood and Social Circle.

The legislation, if passed, would prevent state funds from being used to help build the facilities.

State Sen. RaShaun Kemp (D-South Fulton) said he will also introduce a resolution to back U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia) and his proposed legislation at the federal level to stop ICE from opening the centers..

“This is not just a Democratic issue,” Kemp said. “Republican cities and communities that are saying, ‘Yes, we want strong borders, but we don’t want to house thousands of people in detention centers in our communities.’”
