On the heels of plans to locate ICE detention facilities in Oakwood and Social Circle, some state lawmakers intend to propose a bill this week that seeks to stop them from being placed anywhere in the state, Georgia News Network reports.
Sen. Jaha Howard (D-Cobb County) tells reporters he plans to submit legislation to ban the use of state-controlled money to open and operate ICE detention centers in Georgia. But others like Sen. Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega) tell ANF Atlanta ICE detention centers are needed.
This flurry of activity follows announcements last week that the federal government plans to add the Oakwood and Social Circle facilities in a few weeks. U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia) has proposed an amendment to DHS’ funding package that will prohibit federal funds for those two centers. But any vote on it is not likely until next week at the earliest because Congress is currently in the midst of a 10-day recess.
