GDOT road treatments start Friday a.m.

With another winter storm expected to hit this weekend, the state Department of Transportation (GDOT) plans to begin treating roads in the state Friday morning.

Forecasts indicate the storm will bring light to significant snowfall across much of (Gainesville-based) District 1, including mountain and foothill counties, with extremely cold temperatures expected to follow,” District 1 spokesman Nathan Johnston noted Thursday afternoon. “As a result, Georgia DOT District 1 crews are repositioning personnel, equipment, and materials across the region to ensure the most effective response possible.”

Brine pretreatment operations across northeast Georgia will begin at 7:00 a.m. Friday, with crews focusing first on interstates, U.S. routes, and other “critical and high-priority corridors,” Johnston added, “followed by additional state routes as conditions allow.”

Georgia DOT has replenished brine supplies used during last weekend’s storm and is prepared once again with nearly two million gallons of brine statewide, with resources staged locally to support operations throughout Northeast Georgia.

Johnston pointed out that local roads are maintained by local governments and treatment plans for them may differ from GDOT’s.
