HCSO, HCSD collaborate on school threats video

In a continuing effort to educate students about the ramifications of issuing bogus school threats, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the Hall County School District have released a video
titled “Making School Threats: The Dangers and Consequences of Hoax Threats Against a School.”

“Ideally, we would love to eliminate hoax threats altogether, but we know that’s not realistic,” said Hall
County Sheriff Gerald Couch. “That said, my hope is that any student toying with the idea of making a threat against a school – even as a joke – will see this video and have a change of heart. Beyond that, we want students, teachers and parents who see something suspicious will have the courage to report their concerns.”

The release of the video comes just days after students at a local high school overheard a fellow student make threats and then reported those threats to administrators. The student who made the threats was arrested.

“Threats against schools—real or imagined—cause fear, interrupt learning, and have serious consequences,” Hall County School District Supt. Will Schofield said. “We’re thankful to the Sheriff’s Office for helping us share that message and protect the safety and peace of our schools.”

The nine-minute video features words of advice from law enforcement, school district leaders and court
officials. Local students, except for the actor who portrayed the “offender,” had active roles in the video.
Producers used local schools for footage.

“We encourage any schools in our county and beyond to use the video as a teaching tool in their classrooms. Plus, we’re asking parents to view the video with their kids at home, hopefully opening the door for conversations about school safety,” Sheriff Couch said.
