With an even hotter round of extremely hot weather ahead this week with triple-digit temperatures in many places, including Gainesville, along with triple-digit heat indexes, Jackson EMC (JEMC) is offering tips to help you save money and energy.
JACKSON EMC NEWS RELEASE:
“Tips for Managing Summer Energy Use
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when at home. Avoid turning off the system completely, as it takes more energy to cool the home again. Each degree below 78 can increase cooling costs by approximately 5%.
- Adjust water heater setting to 120 degrees for improved energy efficiency.
- Block direct sunlight by using blinds, shades or curtains — especially on south and west-facing windows.
- Keep heat-producing devices away from thermostats. Items such as lamps and televisions can cause false readings, triggering unnecessary cooling.
- Run ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers during early morning or late evening hours when outdoor temperatures are lower.
- Operate appliances with full loads. Washers, dryers and dishwashers perform more efficiently when used with full loads.
- Activate power-saving or sleep modes on electronics when not in use. Unplug devices that use standby power, such as chargers, coffee makers and TVs.
- Use outdoor grills or energy-efficient appliances. A toaster oven uses significantly less energy than a conventional oven and generates less indoor heat.
- Ensure clear airflow around outdoor A/C units by trimming nearby plants or shrubs.
These tips are easy to put into action and can help you stay comfortable while keeping energy costs under control this summer. For more ways to save, visit jacksonemc.com/waystosave.
