Newtown Florist Club is 75 years old this year.
The Gainesville Civil Rights/Environmental Justice organization began in 1950 by a group of women in the Newtown community who would provide flowers to residents who were mourning the death of a loved one or friend.
Over the years under the leadership of founder Faye Bush, it began advocating for Civil Rights and gave birth to the city’s annual King Day March. Later, it turned to environmental issues, especially the impact that industrial sites bordering and near Newtown contributed to the health of the community’s residents.
Now, it is ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary -We’ve Come This Far by Faith.
Several special events are planned in September but next Monday there will be something called Re-connect Us, a Facebook Live conversation to unite past and present Newtown residents.
The full details of that and the events planned in September are here: NFC 75th Anniversary Schedule of Events… – Newtown Florist Club | Facebook
