This is the story of the arrest of a serial Home Equity Line of Credit fraudster who met his match when attempting to commit his crimes in Forsyth County, a news release from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office begins.
On June 24, detectives were called to United Community Bank on Buford Highway. It was reported that a heavy set, bald, white male wearing a suit and a fedora was attempting to defraud the bank using another client’s identification.
Detectives spoke with the head teller who recognized the man from the bank’s internal communications. Apparently, the suspect had committed similar frauds at multiple locations throughout Metro Atlanta. He has been given the nickname of the “Fedora Guy” by United Community Bank security members.
The teller suspected something wasn’t right because the driver’s license and credit card he handed as identification appeared to be fake. “Fedora” attempted to withdraw $25,000 from the Home Equity Line of Credit account belonging to the victim. The head teller called the victim and he confirmed he was not at the bank attempting to withdraw money from his loan account.
Fedora, identified as 44-year-old Matthew Moore from Bronx, New York, admitted to detectives he had committed similar criminal acts over the last year or so across multiple states and jurisdictions. United Community Bank provided detectives with information showing at least 7 Metro Atlanta jurisdictions who will have cases against him.
