Couple Indicted For Allegedly Scamming Donors of Forsyth County Thrift Store

A couple has been been indicted after allegedly attempting to scam donors to “The Place”, a nonprofit thrift store in Forsyth County.

According to Forsyth County News, 42-year-old Samantha Jo Rollins and 49-year-old Walter Whitman both face two counts of exploitation of an elderly person and theft by deception. Rollins also faces a computer theft charge, “for taking ‘data containing contact information for clients and customers’ of The Place ‘for the purpose of facilitating jury duty scams.’”

The indictment stated that two individuals over the age of 65 were targeted by the couple, “‘by means of deception and false representation’. . .” The suspects told the victims that they had to pay money for missing jury duty, enabling the couple to take over $5,000 from one of the victims and $1,500 from another.

Rollins is currently in the Forsyth County jail with a $40,000 bond after being arrested in April. Whitman is is currently incarcerated in Savannah at Coastal State Prison on several other charges including burglary. His maximum release date is November 2027.
