Meetings scheduled to discuss 16 possible projects along I-85 from 285 to 985

The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) and Gwinnett County have identified 16 potential transportation projects they hope will “improve mobility” along the I-85 corridor between I-285 and I-985.

After a series of technical studies of the corridor and input from stakeholders and from the traveling public, Georgia DOT and Gwinnett County will host upcoming events providing information on the 16 potential transportation projects. The potential projects were identified, GDOT says, “to improve safety and vehicular mobility, facilitate commercial travel, evaluate multimodal options and support Georgia’s economy and the communities located along the corridor.”

The public is invited to attend upcoming meetings and community events for a chance to view the materials, learn about the proposed project benefits, talk with project team members and submit comments on the recommendations.

The public meetings will take place in-person April 30 at George Pierce Park (55 Buford Highway, Suwanee, May 5 at Lucky Shoals Park (4651 Britt Road, Norcross, and May 14 at Shorty Howell Park (2750 Pleasant Hill Road, Duluth. The public can visit 85Study.com to learn more about the upcoming public meetings, find additional information about study efforts to date and participate online by completing a short survey.

The 85 Study area is approximately 18 miles long and is primarily located in Gwinnett County, with a small portion in DeKalb County.

During the study, various considerations of corridor improvements were proposed to address the needs of travelers who utilize I-85. Potential projects include enhancements to the existing express lane (Peach Pass) system; freeway and interchange projects for the general purpose (non-tolled) lanes; improvements to current arterials crossing I-85 along with new local roadway connections; and multimodal improvements for transit riders, bicyclists and pedestrians.
