If a south Georgia woman’s dream comes true, hikers and bikers will one day be able to traverse a 211-mile, paved trail from north Georgia to Savannah.
The dream is that of Mary Charles Howard, who has been pitching the idea to civic groups and local government officials along the proposed route, which would begin at the end of Athens’ Firefly Trail.
How did this come about for the 38-year-old mother of three?
After four years of being frustrated with a lack of safe cycling and economic opportunities in her hometown, Howard decided to take matters into her own hands, according to the Hi-Lo Trail website. And in 2019, she launched the Georgia Hi-Lo Trail initiative after seeing the success of the 39-mile Firefly Trail.
Upon completion, it be the longest paved trail in the country.
