Early morning police chase in Habersham ends in wreck, trip to the hospital, arrest

An Atlanta area man was treated for minor injuries and arrested following a pursuit with
a Habersham County Sheriff’s deputy early Monday.

HABERSHAM CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE:

“Steven Kristopher Wilke, 36, of Kennesaw is charged with two counts of driving under
the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving while license
suspended or revoked, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug-related
objects, too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey stop sign,
headlight requirements and giving wrong signal.

A member of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Highway Enforcement of Aggressive
Traffic unit stopped Wilke’s blue Infinity on Ga. 365 southbound near Cody Road (just after midnight).
As the deputy exited his vehicle, the Infinity fled, initiating a pursuit. The vehicle turned
around and traveled north on Ga. 15 at a high rate of speed, turned left onto Talmadge
Drive in Hollywood, then turned right onto Old Historic 441.

At the intersection of Old Historic 441 at Ga. 15/U.S. 441, “he apparently wasn’t familiar
with the area and continued across and crashed into the guardrail on the northbound
side”, said Special Operations Lt. Travis Jarrell.

Wilke was taken into custody then transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center
Gainesville for treatment. He then was returned to the Habersham County Detention
Center in Clarkesville just before 6 a.m. Monday.

He remained in jail Monday morning.”
