He was an Air Force veteran, a firefighter, service station owner and county commissioner – who once owned one of Gainesville’s last full-time service stations.
Jerry Nix, 94, died Dec. 7. Private graveside services will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery.
After leaving the Air Force, Nix purchased a service station in 1960 from Curtis Prickett at the corner of Green and Broad Streets. Six years later he bought W.L. Keith’s station on Sycamore Street (now E.E. Butler Parkway). His was one of the last full-service stations in town when he closed it in 2004.
Nix served one term on the Hall County Board of Commissioners, representing the South Hall area. But 10 years later, he sought public office again and was elected county commission chairman.
