Gainesville stakeout leads to jailing of Habersham man

A stakeout by Hall County sheriff’s deputies in a supermarket parking lot led to the arrest of a Habersham County man suspected of credit card fraud.

Jose Urriola Montilla, 23, Baldwin, turned himself in at the Hall County Jail Tuesday afternoon following the incident Monday in the Kroger parking lot at 3630 Thompson Bridge Road. Montilla faces a number of charges after sheriff’s deputies say he ran from them when they confronted him about the credit card fraud.

HALL CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE (HCSO) NARRATIVE:

“According to the preliminary investigation, the victim, a Florida woman, called the store to report a pending grocery charge on her banking account. The order was scheduled for curbside pickup Monday morning. Store officials immediately notified HCSO deputies who waited at the store for the suspect’s arrival.

As scheduled, the driver, later identified as…Montilla, pulled his car into the pickup area. When deputies approached, (he) shut his door and started the car. Deputies gave several loud verbal commands and hand signals for… Montilla to stop. He disregarded commands and sped away, striking a parking pole and large curb in the busy parking lot before leaving the area.

Deputies then obtained arrest warrants for Urriola Montilla, who is now charged with the following offenses:

  • Financial transaction card fraud (felony)
  • Fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer (felony)
  • Reckless driving (misdemeanor)
  • Obstruction of an officer (misdemeanor)
  • Striking a fixed object (misdemeanor)

…Montilla posted $15, 850 bond Tuesday evening…and was released from the Hall County Jail.”
