Authorities confirmed Friday that the remains of a New York couple missing for decades were found recently in a Georgia pond.
Charles and Catherine Romer were reported missing back in April 1980.
Without any updates on the case, the trail went cold for over 40 years. This week, Glynn County Police told WSB TV that a car was discovered submerged in a pond and inside it investigators found human remains.
The Grandchildren say they’re grateful they were found and find confort in believing it was possibly just an accident.
EARLIER STORY. POSTED WEDNESDAY: A car similar to one driven by a wealthy New York couple missing for over 40 years has been found in a Georgia pond near the Brunswick hotel where they were last seen. Charles and Catherine Romer disappeared in 1980 while returning home from Miami Beach. Fox5 Atlanta reports a human bone was found inside the vehicle, and the pond is being drained for further investigation. Law enforcement had previously expressed concerns about foul play in the couple’s disappearance, with one theory suggesting they were kidnapped and killed for the $81,000 worth of jewelry Catherine was wearing. A team of sonar searchers from Florida found the car a few days ago.
