News report: ‘Exceptionally high’ rates of thyroid cancer in NE Ga.

For the past decade in Union, Lumpkin, Hall, White, Habersham, and Rabun counties, thyroid cancer cases have been about double or more the national average. That’s according to an investigation by Atlanta TV station 11 Alive. The in-depth report on the findings were as aired Monday night.

The station says it spoke to dozens of people who lived in this corner of the state – men, women and children – affected by the disease. Also featured: doctors at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville and a professor at the University of North Georgia who specializes in public health and epidemiology.
