“Scammers are now viewing obituaries in local newspapers and online and contacting family members of the deceased by phone pretending to be a representative of the funeral home. The suspect then tells the family member they have to Venmo them money to proceed with funeral arrangements.
If this happens to you the best course of action is to notify the funeral home directly and file a police report.
Always be wary of anyone that contacts you by phone, text or email and demands money via Venmo, gift cards, crypto currency, or bank deposit. When in doubt call 911.”
