Key I-85 project completed in Jackson, Banks counties

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced the completion of another phase of widening along the I-85 corridor in Jackson and Banks counties.

The I-85 Widening, Phase III project, widened I-85 north and southbound from two to three lanes between US 129 and US 441. The project also replaced and widened four mainline bridges on I-85 in two locations. The two-year project cost $142 million.

“This is a significant segment of roadway at 13 miles of construction, and we could not be more excited to have this completed and open for the public,” said GDOT Project Manager Alicia Ashburn. “We…look forward to delivering future interstate improvements up to the South Carolina state line.”

Construction on the I-85 Widening, Phase III project began in July 2022. The project team rolled out the opening of segments through late summer as they were completed, leading up to the full project reveal this week.

In the coming weeks, motorists may see crews completing final pavement markings, adding rumble strips to the shoulders, and placing final signage. More information about I-85 Phase Widening, Phase III can be found at https://i-85-widening-015245-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/.
