Cryptocurrency scam prevention signs available

Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) property crimes investigators are out with a new proactive measure they hope will prevent potential victims from falling prey to scammers demanding payment through cryptocurrency machines.

“While members of the community have likely heard of or had a phone call from a scammer talking about missed jury duty, the cryptocurrency payment element is something investigators are seeing more of.

Investigator Cody Davenport recently spearheaded a project to 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗖𝗦𝗢 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗽𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆. The hopes are that potential victims will read the signs and realize they’re on the phone with a scammer before they purchase crypto on the machine and deposit it into the criminal’s virtual wallet.

The signs come at no cost to retailers who have one of these machines installed.”
