UPDATE: One of two boys seriously injured in bicycle-pickup crash dies

UPDATE. 4:00 P.M. FRIDAY – One of two boys seriously injured in a collision between their bicycle and a pickup two days ago in west Gainesville has died.

10-year-old Carlos Herrera Espinal reportedly died early Friday at Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta where he was taken after the Wednesday night accident at Green Hill Circle and Shallowford Road. He had been on life support after suffering “severe head trauma,” according to a GoFundMe account set up for his family. There has been no update on the condition of the other boy who is seven years old.

A spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), which investigated the accident, could not confirm Espinal’s death Friday afternoon.

“I can’t corroborate the child’s status,” Derreck Booth said, and when asked if there had been any charges filed against the driver, added “We have no information on charges currently. The investigation is ongoing.” The driver’s name has not been released.

The youngster was a student at Lyman Hall Elementary School, Hall County School District (HCSD) spokesman Stan Lewis said Friday.

“The district is heartbroken over the passing of Carlos Herrera,” Lewis said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, Lyman Hall Elementary School, and the community. Student services will have an emergency crisis team at the school on Monday to assist school counselors and social workers with any student or staff member struggling with this tragic loss. The Lyman Hall community is strong, and we will pull through this difficult time together.”
