CBS Sports is reporting that Cleveland Browns quarterback and former Gainesville High School standout DeShaun Watson has shared a social media post announcing that his father died Friday, two days before the Browns open the 2024 season against Dallas.
Watson did not offer any other information on the passing of Don Richardson or how his death might affect Watson’s status for Sunday’s game.
“Rest in Peace Pops,” reads Watson’s brief message.
Watson spent much of his life estranged from his father, who left the family when he was young and left his mother, Deann Watson, to raise him as well as three siblings. In 2017, Watson told the Houston Chronicle he remembered seeing his father “maybe five” times while growing up in Gainesville.
He was with the Houston Texans at the time.
